The first thing we should do is to draw a floor plan of the room which we wish to use as a
bathroom. This will help us to define and make the best use of the space available.
The plan should include all the details and information which could have any bearing on the carrying out
of the project: doors, recesses, windows, water inlets, electricity supply and wastepipes,
among others. We should also mark the position of each element which needs to be installed and
draw up a scale plan.
Once we have all the information required, we can design the bathroom according to the decorative
style we have chosen and which by now we are very clear about. In
this case, we have decided to build a rustic bathroom, so we shall combine this type of tile
with a wooden cabinet and bathroom and plumbing fittings in harmony with this style. In this
bathroom we lay the tiling with spacing.

The tile suppliers can provide us with a computer generated design.
If we need help in defining the design, we can ask for advice from the tile supplier. He will usually be
able to provide a perspective drawing, which will give us an idea of the final effect. Some suppliers
now produce these by computer, which means we can visualise the finished installation in an almost
photographic way. What is more, this type of system can also produce a list of the ceramic, sanitary
and plumbing materials which we will need, as well as the price. All that we need to provide is the
floor plan with all the information.
Before purchasing the material, and to be sure of buying the correct amount, we need to define the
layout of the tiles in the bathroom, by making a small drawing of the elevation of the wall as well as
a floor plan.
Floor tiling: We will select a stoneware tile measuring 31x31 cm which has an aged (rustic)
appearance with black spacing measuring 7 mm.
Tiling the walls: In this bathroom which we have planned we are going to start tiling the walls
with the same tiles being used on the floor. We will lay the stoneware tiles up to a height of
two tiles, always making sure that these tiles are in alignment with the floor tiling. We will
then lay a white ceramic tile measuring 28x28 cm, aligned diagonally and with 2 mm spacing,
which will be edged both above and below by a matching border tile. This together will be
equivalent to the height of three tiles placed diagonally and will not reach the ceiling. We
will finish the wall with yellow paint (the white tiles and the border will have a yellow
pattern) applied using a sponge.
