Diagonal Cutting

After having laid the first few whole tiles, which in this case have been the border tiles, we should start to cut diagonally cut tiles for the first row of the upper surface. For this type of cut it is advisable to use a TR model manual cutter. In this case we will use a TR-600 machine in the normal position,as the cut which we wish to make is an exact half-tile.

First we adjust the tile to the maximum in the graduated protractor, and at the other end align the tile with the scoring wheel projection. Once adjusted and before scoring, the lateral stop is positioned inverted at 45º, to maintain the setting for multiple cuts without having to re-adjust them. This position can also be used for cutting a diagonal half tile in half to obtain a quarter tile.

We score the tile in one go and with a very even movement, paying attention to the correct scoring of the end of the tile to avoid any deviation in the cut.

The edges of the tile are the best place to separate it. The separation should be done as near the edge as possible, with the maximum contact possible between the hold-down plate of the machine and the tile.

We do not need to move the stops of the machine until we reach a corner which needs differently shaped pieces to the diagonal. Then we adjust the protractor 45º backwards and put the lateral stop in the normal position to increase the contact surface with the tile.

From here on, we measure the perspective of the pieces which need to be cut to have a direct reading in millimetres behind the measuring rule of the machine.

It is advisable to use the RUBI TR-600 machine for cutting tile diagonally.
